TOKYO -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., a unit of Sony Corp., said Monday that it will start selling its next-generation PlayStation system in Japan March 4.

PlayStation2, as the system has been named, will be available in Europe and North America in the autumn of 2000, the company said. A launch for other Asian countries is scheduled for next summer, Sony Computer said.

In Japan, the game system will have a suggested retail price of 39,800 yen ($366). A price for overseas markets wasn't given.

The Sony (SNE) unit said its first-week shipments for PlayStation2 are seen at one million units. Cumulative shipments of Sony's existing PlayStation have topped 60 million, Sony Computer said.

In advance of the launch, Sony Computer said 89 publishers in Japan have signed license agreements to develop content for the new game system. In addition, 46 North American companies and 27 European companies have signed letters of intent to develop content.

PlayStation2 supports both Audio CD and DVD-Video formats. It is backward compatible with the original PlayStation.
