<Police said the professor is not a suspect, and that there are no solid suspects in the case. They believe, however, Jovin knew her killer. >

What evidence caused the police to change from saying [ on 12/28/98] that the professor (Jim) is NOT a suspect to his being in a "pool of suspects" ?

What evidence or other basis do the police have for believing that Suzanne Jovin knew her killer?

Unless I have misread or omitted to read something significant, based on the statements by the New Haven PD and those from the Yale Administration and the NH Mayor, it appears that saying Suzanne knew her killer does not have any solid factual basis; but, rather, is the result of public relations to keep minimized the fears of the residents of NH, and, perhaps more important, the Yale students and their families. As I believe Jeff pointed-out, the crime statistics for New Haven are alarmingly high, and are intentionally not well-publicized in that area.

If any of you reading this are, or have been, in law enforcement, or in the mental health professions, or anyone else who has an opinion: the use of a knife by someone with the characteristics of Jim Van de Veld -- well-educated, always in white collar positions, non-militaristic, impeccably neat and organized -- does not seem likely to me as a layperson; and I welcome your input.

Jon, thank you for the article with a picture of Suzanne. It helps to have an image of her.
