Mannesmann CEO will stay in touch

By CBS MarketWatch

LONDON (CBS.MW) -- Mannesmann AG (MNNSY: news, msgs) Chief Executive Klaus Esser told investors in New York that he plans to talk to Vodafone AirTouch PLC (VOD: news, msgs) Chief Executive Chris Gent in the next few days after the two corporate chiefs have met with their respective shareholders about a possible merger between Mannesmann and Vodafone. Esser's comments were viewed by some investors as a sign that the chief of the German telecommunications and engineering company may be prepared to negotiate a friendly merger with Vodafone, the British mobile-phone operator that is seeking to buy Mannesmann by offering 53.7 Vodafone shares for each Mannesmann share in a deal valued at 262 euros a share, or $133 billion. But Mannesmann swiftly threw cold water on that idea, issuing a statement Sunday that said Vodafone's current offer "fails to reflect the value potential of Mannesmann on a stand-alone basis." "There is no change in this position," the statement said further. "Nor should the ongoing willingness to maintain contact with Vodafone, with whom we have shared investments, be interpreted as an intention to enter negotiations." (The Wall Street Journal)
