GREECE

In Greece, St. Nicholas is a man of the sea, his feast day is December 6th, which is honored as a day of prayer for the safety of all the sea-faring men.

The Christmas Bread is the center of Yuletide celebration. This round loaf is decorated with scenes of family life and is surrounded by wine, corn fruits and garlic. The father cuts a cross on the bread and gives a piece to each member of the family. The crumbs are scattered to the animals and over fields to insure health and prosperity for the coming year.

January 1st, St Basil's Day is the gift-giving day. On this day St. Basil's Pie is made with a coin hidden inside. It is believed that the finder of the coin will enjoy good fortune throughout the coming year.

On "Greek Cross Day" in January, masses are said beginning at dawn. At mid-day the procession leaves church and goes to a nearby body of water. Here the priest reads from the Bible and releases a white dove, symbolic of the holy spirit. The priest then hurls a cross into the water (this represents Christ's baptism). Young men dive into the waters, each trying to recover the crucifix. The successful contestant is blessed by the priest, bringing him good fortune in the years ahead.
