SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- NorthPoint Communications (Nasdaq: NPNT - news), a competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) and leading broadband service provider, today announced the launch of its digital subscriber line (DSL) network in San Antonio. For the first time, area businesses, home-based offices and telecommuters will have access to DSL service from a competitive provider. NorthPoint is the first data CLEC to deliver DSL service to San Antonio and today expands its national network to 33 markets, the largest network footprint of any DSL provider.

NorthPoint DSL uses an ordinary copper telephone wire to deliver affordable Internet access at speeds up to 1.5 Mbps, more than 25 times faster than the common dial-up modem. NorthPoint's symmetric DSL (SDSL) provides two-way bandwidth that supports the full spectrum of today's ''push'' and ''pull'' enterprise applications. NorthPoint DSL supports a range of business applications including intranets, extranets, virtual private networks (VPNs), email, electronic commerce, Web hosting, and more.
NorthPoint's DSL service will be available to subscribers in San Antonio by the end of 1999. During the early stages of network deployment, more than half a million San Antonio businesses and homes
will be passed by NorthPoint's network. NorthPoint will continue to extend its footprint to more subscribers through 2000. With the introduction of service in San Antonio, NorthPoint builds on an
already strong presence in Texas. Earlier this year, NorthPoint was the first competitive DSL provider to introduce service in Austin, Dallas and Houston.
NorthPoint, a wholesale service provider, has alliances with more than 200 local, regional and national ISPs and other service provider partners to deliver DSL service to subscribers. Subscribers in San Antonio can obtain NorthPoint DSL from Texas service provider Jump.net and national providers such as Flashcom, Global Crossing, ICG Communications, Inc., Phoenix Networks and PSN.net.
NorthPoint DSL provides fractional T-1 speeds at a fraction of the cost, delivers superior network performance, and is easier to configure than ISDN. In addition, businesses can easily migrate to
higher speeds as their Internet applications grow and their bandwidth needs increase.
