Here is the best example I can think of at the moment, alexa:

For many years mining and petroleum engineers used all the earthbound technology they had to discover new veins of ore or underground sources of petroleum. They were relatively close to the object of their desire. Now with the BIG picture -- satellites in orbit miles up -- they can discover potential new oil fields or mines much easier.

Another: To study a comet effectively one must get the BIG picture. If one uses the 200" at Palomer it would not be as effective as a wide-field telescope.
