Bill: I agree with you completely re. the unlikelihood of SUNW realizing financial gain from Java. Still, Gilder's no dummy, surely he made a plausible case to you, would you mind sharing it?

None of this changes the fact that Java is gaining ground despite lack of standardization. So far it's failed on the client because of incompatibilities, sluggish performance, and download speeds. The last two are changing as processor speeds and high-bandwidth home internet service proliferate. The first issue's the toughie, but it's not a problem on servers, and Java is making deep inroads as a server-side component language.

Redmond would be foolish to ignore or abandon the language. What ever happened to "embrace and extend"?
