Excellent comments. I like the idea of a country that doesn't give a damn about U.S. trade sanctions, and allows life-saving drugs to be manufactured within its boundaries and distributed to poor people all over the world ~ maybe one that doesn't have free trade with the United States already, and has nothing to lose. Cuba and Libya come to mind. If I were a believer in conspiracies, I'd hypothesize that Bin Ladeen's plant that was destroyed was really manufacturing contraband pharmaceuticals, and that's why we took it out. Whether or not that is the case, someone like Bin Ladeen would be doing a greater service to humanity by manufacturing contraband pharmaceuticals than explosives.

If I were a believer in conspiracies, I would hypothesize that our administrations don't try to intervene on behalf of poor people who need drugs in the Third World because we think that there are too many people in the world, anyway, so it's better that they die. But of course that's impossible. No one really believes it's better that poor people die than continue to reproduce ~ do they?

I remember a really ugly joke that was told during the oil embargo ~ caveat: I don't approve of the following joke, I am recounting it for purposes of showing how SOME people ~ not me ~ feel about "minorities" ~

A: "There's good news and bad news ~ the Martians have landed and they are eating [insert name of minority group here] and pissing gasoline."

B: "What's the bad news?"

But of course, President Clinton and Vice-President Gore don't believe that there are too many people on earth and that population growth in Africa and Asia threatens the environment, do they?
