I thought Braveheart was very good. Pardon me for saying so, but I think it is because Mel Gibson is a Roman Catholic, and found a deep emotional connection with the material, which is about family and clan and honor, faith and duty, standing up like a man, and so forth. I say that being Catholic helped because it about the things in this life that are sacred, and connect us ineffably to the transcendent moral order, rather than about personal salvation or duty as an adjunct to religion. He found the correct emotional tone of the battle scenes, a gravity and determination combined with camaraderie and a certain relief to engage the enemy......
