Check out story in today's Wall Street Journal. They quote Ellen Hancock, CEO of Exodus Communications. The next to the last paragraph is about Datametrics:
Ellen Hancock
Mrs. Hancock, the 56-year-old president and chief executive officer of Exodus Communications Inc., a Santa Clara, Calif., Web-site hosting company, spends the majority of her day online, browsing around her own company's software documents and responding to customer e-mail inquiries about such things as network performance and electronic firewalls to guard a site from hackers. Mrs. Hancock's career has included stints at International Business Machines Corp., where she rose to senior vice president at the Armonk, N.Y., computer company. She also worked at Apple Computer Inc., Cupertino, Calif., where she was chief technology officer.
Mrs. Hancock says some of her most valuable technology information comes from Internet sites that would appeal only to an ardent techie. One is MIQ Ratings, published by Matrix Information & Directory Services Inc., in Austin, Texas. MIQ Ratings monitors thousands of sites every 15 minutes to analyze how computer networks perform in three ways: transmission speed, data reliability and ease of network access. These ratings help Mrs. Hancock to evaluate how her company stacks up against the competition, and she recommends them to anyone interested in hiring a Web-site management company.
Another of her favorite sites is VisualRoute, run by Datametrics Systems Corp. of Fairfax, Va. The site provides visitors with tools to measure the speed with which their computer networks transmit data. Mrs. Hancock recently used the site to evaluate how well her own company's installation of a duplicate site on the East Coast had improved network performance. "It's an interesting tool," she says, which showed her that the secondary site had cut response time to a request for information significantly -- to about six milliseconds, from 70 to 80 milliseconds.
Mrs. Hancock also subscribes to VentureWire, an online newsletter for venture capitalists, high-tech investors and entrepreneurs published by Technologic Partners in New York.
