To do downloads of CD quality (as opposed to MP3)you really need widespread deployment of broadband otherwise it is too slow. At present Road runner is doing a trial in San Diego (and perhaps Portland, ME) with Album Direct to download CDs to computers. Word (from I believe New York times)of results is mixed.
Other recent download experiments such as new david Bowie CD met with very low results (from Billboard).
At present retailers such as Transworld and companies such as Sony are considering downloading direct to kiosks instore of back catalog material.
The whole situation is of course very much in flux and as for security, it is waiting for the SDMI, secure digital music initative to come up with a new security standard which will apply to MP3. I don't know who players and contenders are in SDMI.
