ADAPTIVE BROADBAND(TM) WINS $6 MILLION
AWARD FROM CHINA?S LARGEST BANK FOR
MIDAS(TM) SATELLITE-BASED CIRCUIT
RESTORAL SOLUTION

Bellwether Contract Uniquely Positions Adaptive Broadband for
$100 million China Opportunity

Sunnyvale, California -- ADAPTIVE BROADBAND CORPORATION
(Nasdaq National Market: ADAP) announced that its Multimedia
Integrated Digital Access System (MIDAS) is being deployed by the
Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), the largest bank in the
People?s Republic of China and second largest bank in Asia. MIDAS is a
satellite-based technology for automatic circuit restoral of terrestrial data
networks. Adaptive Broadband will provide both the MIDAS system and
program management services under a contract valued at approximately
$6 million (U.S.).

MIDAS: Restores Circuits, Manages Traffic Overflow, Enables Video
Conferencing ICBC will use MIDAS to back up its terrestrial network of
leased fiber optic Digital Data Network (DDN) circuits, assuring a
availability rate of greater than 99 percent on a continuing basis. The
network has over 300 sites, including its Beijing headquarters and other
locations throughout the country, and supports over 8,400 automatic teller
machines and 56,300 point of sale (POS) terminals. Additionally, MIDAS
supplements the terrestrial network by automatically switching the network
traffic to satellite when the terrestrial circuits get congested, alleviating the
need to lease additional bandwidth for overflow circuits. And, because
ICBC now owns its network infrastructure through MIDAS, the bank has
instant access to video conferencing, bypassing the local telephone
company?s charges and set-up time.

Taking the Lead in Huge China Infrastructure Market

According to John Zhang, Adaptive Broadband?s senior vice
president-global business development, ?ICBC selected the MIDAS
system because it provides maximum performance and reliability for both
circuit restoral and bandwidth on demand. The other large banks in China
have plans to deploy circuit restoral systems also, and are watching this
project closely. China has a huge DDN infrastructure, and we believe the
ICBC project is the first in a series of continuing business leading to a
$100 million opportunity.? The system being installed consists of MIDAS
traffic nodes, to be located at the network?s hub and in other locations
throughout the country; a MIDAS network management system (NMS) at
the hub to manage traffic nodes, transponder bandwidth and power; and
control channel infrastructure to provide communication between the NMS
and the nodes for network management and control.
