Several books are available on the subject. The easiest to read is "EVA -The Real Key to Creating Wealth" by Al Ehrbar published by John Wiley and Sons.
see Fortune Magazine 11/22/99. I suggest a search using "Stern Stewart" on northernlight.com
A surprising number of US companies return less than their cost of capital. Unlike GAAP, Stern Stewart doesn't consider equity capital to be free, they consider it to cost as much as a shareholder could earn from a basket of stocks of equal risk. EVA (economic value added)means how a company is run from a shareholders as opposed to a management point of view..
Considering the pitiful EVA of many companies, techs don't seem quite as expensive.
