<<Why should consumers subsidize the embalming of a town or
neighborhood? >>

How about for the reason of preserving the general quality of life there? Americans in most places are so bent on utter overconsumption of unnecessary goods at the very lowest prices until they are simply wallowing in them, that quality of life issues don't seem to even enter into the equation.

Does everyone actually need multiple SUVs to get to the shopping center at the edge of town, TVs in every room, etc? Not really! Small towns with active, healthy commerical centers offer something intangible that we lose when WalMarts take them over. Dying downtowns are ugly, and usually a completely unnecessary sorrow. Of course, that is just an aesthetic observation, contrary to our religion of free markets.

Sorry to be cynical--I just tire sometimes of crass materialism and the idea that greed is always good.
