I think one of the possible benefits of trade barriers is that a country could stipulate what its values were. For example, if most people in the United States agreed that child labor was repugnant our elected officials could erect trade barriers of goods that were made with child labor.

That might sound harsh, but the end result, because we are such a large market, is that there might be fewer goods made with child labor. Then we wouldn't be limited to Greenpeace calendars for Christmas!
