From CNN Political Debate:

CNN 12/6/99 - 8:50:43 PM

Forbes did press Bush, a former oil man, about what he would do to keep fuel prices low during New Hampshire's cold winters. Bush said he would encourage exploration and alternative fuels, and said: 'Governments don't control the price of oil, at least not in America.'

(Forbes) "(OPEC) ..... withholding production, that means of course that consumers and farmers are hurt because prices go up. New England is going to have a very expensive winter with heating oil."

Q... What would you do to get the price down again?

>>(Bush) "Encourage exploration as a matter of supply and demand. I'd keep plans in place that say -- to say to drillers, we want you to continue to exploring. I have great hope for the natural gas business The natural gas business is immune to OPEC, the natural gas business is hemispheric in nature. The natural gas business is finally recovering from the foolish ways of the Jimmy Carter era when they tried to nationalize the natural gas with price fixing and demand. The demand for gas has finally come back. That's good, that's how we'll be less dependent....that's very good for exploration. End war on the like. Also good for the future of natural gas OPEC is putting the squeeze on oil prices."

>>(Bush) ".....Texas that will have a near immediate affect that is decontrolled our electricity system. To invite a different type of demand into the equation in Texas. In other words, you're focusing on the supply side. I think we need to wean ourselves out of foreign oil and rely on other products....in my state of Texas we are doing that. We have a huge demand of natural gas which is immune from OPEC and immune from overseas pricing controls."....

A wee bit more positive, IMO.
My best,
T.
