JCJ -
While you're there look at the Apache server growth/share.

You're preaching to the choir on Apache/Linux - nearly half of CPQ's webservers run that combination, and it is also a favorite of the white box crowd. I think VA Linux plans on selling some systems with that combination also <gg>. I was not making an argument for the M$ stack in the web server business, I never mentioned them at all. You have me confused with someone else - I don't tout the M$ stack for that use.

But the rapid spread of low cost alternatives like Apache/Linux for web hosting, the shift in machines supporting that trend to Intel based products, and the fact that web front ends distribute well (and thus can effectively use lots of small machines) is part of the trend that works against Sun in that space.

And lastly, do you realize that TCP value doesn't include a TCO component? Does that mean anything to you at all?
Yes I understand the benchmarking business pretty well. I was under contract to Sun doing benchmark optimization for several years in the mid-90s and I currently do a fair amount of work on Sun systems. I am quite familiar with Sun's roadmap.

Don't confuse me with Sun bashers - I have a Sun system in my house, and have worked with Sun systems for nearly 15 years. I am trying to get some of the nonsense being posted here by both Sun bashers and Sun advocates into prespective, and I have a pretty good knowledge of the industry and Sun's current market. Several people who have substantial investments in Sun have PM'd me asking my opinion on some of the recent posts here, and rather than continue to respond privately I thought I would wade in directly on the thread. There are many intelligent contributors here and I am expecting an interesting discussion.
