DJ Santa Cruz Operation To Unveil New Tarantella Version

By Mark Boslet

PALO ALTO, Calif. (Dow Jones)--Santa Cruz Operation Inc. (SCOC) is expected to introduce a new version of its Tarantella software on Tuesday that for the first time offers connectivity to Windows applications.

Tarantella up to now has provided desktop computers access to application software on mainframes and Unix servers, connecting machines that use separate operating systems.

With the introduction of Tarantella Enterprise II and its links to applications running on Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) Windows NT servers, SCO hopes to steal business from Citrix Systems Inc. (CTXS), which is established in the Windows connectivity market, said Peter Bondar, vice president of Tarantella marketing.

SCO also plans to cut prices from the Enterprise I version to build market share. A 25-user license will start at $4,925, or about half of what Enterprise I cost without volume discounts, the company said.
