Yes, it is sad. It's also sad that the diagnosis is supposed to somehow make it taboo to bring up the numerous observations of people who were there at the time about the Reagan presence in the Reagan administration that contrast somewhat with the current revisionist "brilliant Reagan" line. I'm sorry that the primary line of defense on Iran-contra at the time was that Reagan wasn't quite there, but that's what it was.

Last time around, I think the local line was that to say anything bad about Reagan was like saying Washington didn't cut down the cherry tree. To my knowledge, most reputable historians don't claim Washington cut down the cherry tree, but I haven't been keeping up with the output of the conservative think tanks of late.
