Just to support your statements ... you said:

The most important aspects of this announcement, IMHO, are related to two key areas:

1. Will all end-users be blatantly aware that Novell's technology is involved in this product? What I mean is that "out of site, out of mind" is a very true statement. I would not call this a consumer success if no consumer is aware that Novell's technology is involved, and if they see no obvious benefits from the announcement and technology. The Novell name needs to be *on* the instant message product in the consumer's face! If the only value is that Alta Vista is going to use the back-end technology, then this can be seen as a simple directory sale ... one directory. This is similar to the corporate sales ... end-users rarely see the benefits (directly and blatantly) that the directory provides ... it's the administrator of the network that receives the real value.

2. If Alta Vista is going to use the directory, and the end-user is *not* going to see the Novell name anywhere, then I hope that Alta Vista is paying Novell for the directory using some sort of a pricing scheme that would let Novell see revenue for each "user/year" of usage. They should have to pay Novell for each user object in the directory, for each year of usage (or quarter) ... this should then generate a good bit of revenue if the Novell name is not going to get the exposure ...

The "Internet" value can't cut both ways ... if the directory is invisible to the end-user, (meaning Novell *didn't* gain any "eyeballs") and the only real thing that Novell got is a press release, then I'm not sure that Novell is going to benefit as much as it could ... the money has to come from somewhere!
