ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Philips Semiconductors has announced the completion of a $200 million expansion at its fab here that will add about 20 per cent to the capacity, or about 4,000 8-inch wafer starts per month.

The announcement comes a week after Philips announced a similar capacity expansion to its Nijmegen, The Netherlands, facility which involved spending of about $250-million.

Philips here has added a new line that will produce chips using its 0.25-micron BiCMOS processes known as QUBiC principally for cellular phone and paging applications. The line, Philips' first 8-inch line here, has already begun production and will ramp during 2000.

"Philips Semiconductors continues to invest in its manufacturing capabilities on a worldwide basis at a time when there is high demand for increased capacity for semiconductor production," said Stuart McIntosh, chief operations officer of Philips Semiconductors.
