Wow! Talk about an impressive spike! (Ouch -- I'm still short!)

There is of course their press release today:

biz.yahoo.com

...however, after digging through the buzzwords so typical of a software company press release (kinda hypey for my taste), I don't find very much substance. There is some touting of the customer (hey, they do "e-merchandising" ;-), and the usual benefits of an ODBMS, obviously emphasizing Versant in this case (I of course don't have a problem with that - I agree that for some applications, ODBMSs are wonderful and irreplaceable).

The thing sadly lacking in the press release is any quantitative or substantive facts. Basically what I'm referring to is something that would indicate that this represents a decent sale for Versant. By "decent" I mean either a significant dollar amount, or a strategically significant sale.

Are they going to issue a press release when they close an ordinary, run-of-the-mill sort of deal? (Not that there's anything wrong with run-of-the-mill deals, they are often the bread and butter of a successful software company). I have nothing against small companies issuing brassy (and perhaps even self-promotional) press releases showing how they're taking on the world and winning. But I really shake my head and wonder what companies are up to when they start issuing press releases about what seem like nonmaterial sales closings. If you've got a decent product (and I think they do), why degrade your corporate image issuing press releases which might look to be pretty "touty" or "hypey" in retrospect?
