I'm not sure that this "is it used for a web server" question is really the point. Sure, there is a market, a big and mushrooming market, for the boxes that actually host the web pages. Sure, it would be nice if Sun had a dominant market share in those boxes as I am sure it once did. But, as you point out, this part of the market is becoming extremely competitive and low priced, i.e., a commodity market, so the margins aren't likely to be very good there.
But, the host for the web pages isn't the only thing which is driven by the growth of the Internet. In fact, this is somewhat yesterday's news because that is the growth of passive web pages. Where the real excitement is, and where I think the most potential is for big bucks in getting the job done, is in various forms of e-Commerce. I have no personal knowledge of the customer profiles, but I'll bet that type of customer figures in pretty big in the UE10000 customer base. |
