Red Hat is a joke (stock price and, to a lesser extent, the product). Linux might be a threat to some small degree, (although I personally don't believe that it is nearly the challenge to MSFT that Apple and Commodore were a few years back). No way is MSFT going to sit on its arse and watch its market share erode. My guess is that they know that their existing OS progression of products will carry them until the OS as we presently know it is a thing of the past. They poised to take on a CSCO type approach after that, as they already have their fingers in so many pies it is unbelievable. Look at all of the pocket change investments that they have sitting on virtually all tech fronts. I believe that they will look to utilize the acquisitive strategy of CSCO as they hedge various technological trends in the future. If you think back to the origins of MSFT, this is very much in keeping with their nimble movements. Whether you love or hate their tactics, you've got to respect them. That is a reason to own the stock. Objections about their approach are good reasons to go by protest buttons or to do a Seattle sit-in. As for Red Hat, check out how costly the "free" operating system is...then give it to three or four of your buddies or relatives and try to get them to switch over. See what their reaction is...I'll bet it will be something like a post sour milk gulp...FWIW.
