The future of enterprise storage is SANs - there is too much economic pressure to go any other way long term. Also SANs provide a more robust environment with less downtime, better disaster recovery and transparent backup.

SUNW can certainly optimize both their servers and storage to more fully enable SANs. Getting into multi-vendor storage is harder, which is where EMC fits in - they are the current kings of that business. Storage has been a good high margin business for SUNW, and one which they have protected over the years, so I don't really see any long-term alliance with EMC. SUNW needs to develop that revenue asset for itself.
