The consequences of this problem are, in my opinion huge.
No John, they are not.

Privacy is not something that is that high on the consumers watch list. Here in the US we have been using AMPS for years. Any fool with a Radio Scanner can eavesdrop.

The advent of digital technology has given us the potential for secure Voice communication, a concept which has, in fact, struck horror into the hearts of governments, even here in the US. CDMA inherently is secure, and you may be surprised to learn that QCOM works closely with the NSA to allow the government to continue to eavesdrop. Why would the Chinese be any different?
