Maria kind of reminds me of a girl - let's call her Janet - I dated in college, who liked to use the word "ostensibly." Or rather, she liked to come up with sentences where the word "ostensibly" would fit. And so, she was always making ironic comments and observations. It was both irritating and endearing.

Maria, however, has little sense of irony, and doesn't make much distinction between the obvious and the ostensible. Not to be sentimental, but these days I meet too many Marias and too few Janets. Call me a crackpot, but I happen to believe that the growing popularity of intellectual dishonesty is merely reinforced by the ever-rising market indexes.
