In short, there is nothing wrong with the X-Windows protocol - commonly referred to as X11 compatible - which happens to be somewhat similar to the ICA protocol. The main problem with X-Windows applications is just that they are Unix-based - and very simply - mainstream developers opted to create applications in Windows as opposed to Unix - as that's what users have always asked for - Microsoft Windows applications - not X-Windows applications.
