Internet connections:
It used to be that my connection could be retained by having some sort of “auto refresh” website open...or a ticker up on the screen, or an Island book viewer...etc. Now it seems that a repetitive auto refresh is “detected” and not considered “activity”. As little as 20 minutes needs to elapse before a disconnect occurs. I cannot even seem to take a phone call, (separate line), without having to continue some activity to keep the connection. Time out to read the paper, or catch a segment of CNBC, is out of the question without signing back on.
The setup can be made to automatically dial for reconnection, but I pay a few cents for each phone call. Although eight or nine calls per day is not burdensome, it has now become a matter of principle...
The ISP support says it is due to inactivity and is necessary to be fair to others wishing to use their servers...and I agree...to some extent...BUT IT IS A DAMN NUISANCE for someone who spends most of the day working on or near the computer...
This situation “seems” to coincide with my browser upgrade from IE4 to IE5...
Is there a way to mitigate what is becoming a not so minor irritation?... while I wait on DSL or cable networking? Between the disconnects and the molasses speed of SI, I may have to resort to blood pressure medication... :)
I sense somehow that I am not alone...although I know it is not an issue for you jw, with DSL, or Mr Mark, with cable...
TIA,
