Indian cabinet approves plan to create three new states

Dec 7 1999 23:08 IST

NEW DELHI, Dec 7 (AFP) - The Indian cabinet Tuesday approved plans to carve three new states out of three large provinces following demands from residents for greater autonomy, the Press Trust of India reported.

The news agency quoted government sources as saying the cabinet gave the go-ahead for plans to create the new state of Uttarakhand from the Himalayan hill districts in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

It also backed plans to carve out a tribal belt from the eastern province of Bihar, calling it Vananchal and the new state of Chattisgarh from the sprawling central state of Madhya Pradesh.

The proposals will be sent to President K.R. Narayanan for approval before being referred to the respective state assemblies, the sources said.

India currently has 26 states.
