Rambi - re Marie Callender (day late and many dollars short, but what the hell)

Marie Callender definitely a real person. She was the mother of Don Callender who turned the pie thing into a business.

The woman pictured on Marie Callender packaging is not Don's mom (big surprise, huh) but a trophy hostess named Katie from one of the earlier Callender stores that Don married.

My sweetie worked for Callender's for years (N. Calif. manager and corporate bar trainer for openings nationwide) and remains a friend of Don's. He was well-liked throughout the empire and very good to the people who worked for him.

The meatload sandwiches WERE fabulous. As for the disappearing chicken in the pot pies, noted by Constant Reader, credit that to Don selling the company, maybe a dozen years ago. A succession of new corporate parents, cut costs left and right - including chicken, it would seem :-).

Never had one of the frozen dinners but can highly recommend the corn bread mix.

More than you or anyone wanted to know, but there's so little I DO know, I wanted to pass this on.

Mike
