Data Quest-
Gave the roadmap to the crowd today and they put switches at the very top of growth and margins - HBA's, switched fabric, and Directors being the star on top of the Switch crown.
Again -Trouble with standards slowing everybody down though SUN believes JIRO is the answer that will move the standard to actually be standards.
Data quest said the ammount of terabytes need to be moved will provide plenty of business for both the SAN and the NAS but that that SANs will be larger revenue and higher growth cycle but the numbers were staggering for both- I only understand the NAS to a small degree so didn't really get what he was saying about problem areas of NAs like distribution.I didn't write all the numbers down but they were impressive to say the least.
The Data Quest speaker said he kept trying to find ways to pull the numbers down but saw the market for SANs at over 20billion and i think it was 25 billion by 2003
This is the line-up -No new players -too late for entry -Possibly Cisco buys there way in but as far as developing there own toooo late- Greg Reyes went as far as to say he thought Cisco would have to buy- too late to develop but could announce something as early as next week -It was in response to a question of -Where's Cisco? Bluster -No idea -That guy is tough to figure but if he wanted to leave the impression that Brocade and Cisco knew each other he did that.

Events of the year for FC- EMC aquires DGN which quickly expanded the open storage market
Dell bringing Dell model to the SANs- There was some buzz that Dell was doing well- Might be a great one to own
IBM aquires Mylex for what dataquest called a steal- I think he was about to say criminally negligent but stopped himself<G>
IBM enters the fray and going after entry level biz which helps Brocade and helps IBm get into the biz with shark.
HP(Hitachi) - EMC(now a blood feud) Whichever one you ask they are winning hands down over the other- I wouldn't bet against EMC though.Dataquest saw this as a big loss for HP. Even scolded their table jokingly.

Dataquest felt that Sans does not peak at least till 2002.

Ed -SUN was impressive -To me they came across as the internet SANs Gorilla.SUN gives there spin on Gilder.
