You cite some insensitive remarks. In his defense of Demjanjuk (who nobody else would speak for) he was bothered by the fact that an American was literally kidnapped and spirited out of the country by the Justice Dept. While pundits in this country went hysterical over his defense of "Ivan the Terrible", the Israeli courts wound up agreeing with Buchanan and let Demjanjuk go.

It says somewhere in one of those links that he once wrote for The Spotlight newspaper. If that is true it is bothersome. My hunch is they picked up his column through a syndicate. The link doesn't say when or for how long the column ran.

My main problem with the Buchanan attackers is they play fast and loose with quotes and citations. If truth were on their side, exaggeration and deliberately quoting out of context wouldn't be necessary.

The quote that is bandied about as his most damning quote is the one sentence which reads, (paraphrase) "Hitler was a courageous soldier in WWI and went on to become adept at political organizing." I recall reading this column. I know why his detractors never supply the whole column. It was a column that put forth the question of how did such a man come to power in a civilized country like Germany. He was recounting Hitler's career and the steps he took to achieve power. Being courageous as a soldier was an important stepping stone in his rise to power. It was a dry historical observation. That sentence is the only thing that could have been construed as praise when taken as a stand alone quote.

To lump Buchanan in with David Duke, Willis Carto, Bo Grietz, and others of that ilk is not only plain wrong, it insults a lot of good Catholic people, who are his main supporters.
