Worldwide 4th-Quarter PC Shipment Forecast Cut to 17% by Intl Data Corp.

"IDC blamed the lower forecast on a slowdown in corporate PC purchases because of the Year 2000 date change and a shortage of components after an earthquake in Taiwan in late September. Several PC makers, including Dell Computer Corp., have blamed the earthquake for crimping profits."

"DC, based in Framingham, Massachusetts, said it expects a 23 percent rise in shipments for the full year, driven by the popularity of the Internet, lower-priced PCs and the improving Asian computer market..."
