David,

Thanks for your sound questions. Your concerns have already been addressed somewhere on this thread, but the posts might be hard to find amid all the trash talk. Here is a quick recap. If you are interested, please scan the posts or go to gumminvestors.com to see if your concerns are addressed. Everyone won't come to the same conclusion after doing more due diligence, but I think it is fair to see if there are good answers before coming to a conclusion.

<If you already had the cold, then the virus would already be attached, thus their product wouldn't work.>

The rhinovirus infects the body through a process of autoinoculation. Zicam interrupts the autoinoculation process and the body's immune system eliminates any virus that has already infected cells.

<Also the wording homeopathic means it hasn't been fda approved (I think)>

The FDA regulates homeopathic remedies and zinc gluconate has been approved and is listed in the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States (HPUS) as an active ingredient in homeopathic cold remedies.

<the active ingredient is Zincum Gluconium (if its correctly named, I'm guessing the ingredients are zinc and glucose.)>

The active ingredient is zinc gluconate and it has been proven through double blind placebo controlled independent clinical studies to reduce the duration of the common cold. Quigley sponsored the study and it was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

<I did some hunting around and here is a patent that sounds quite familiar:

patents.uspto.gov;

The patent that you found has been the subject of much discussion recently. It is held by George Eby and if for oral delivery of zinc gluconate. Zicam is a nasal gel, and two law firms, independently representing Gum Tech, opined that Zicam does not infringe on the Eby patent. The patent holder himself said that his patent does not cover nasal delivery.

<has an interesting quote. I have no idea if its true or not. a lot of the homeopathic stuff is just talk and if you think it works, then it works...>

One can always find opposing opinions on nearly every subject. Who you believe depends on your criteria for what is fact and what isn't. I can provide plenty of research from doctors and scientists that support the effect that zinc has on reducing the duration of the common cold. I can also find opinions from doctors and journalists that do not think it works. I suspect that this would be true of many medicine, even those approved by the FDA as prescription drugs.

I'm unfamiliar with the ZIA value. Perhaps Howard can answer this question. He is currently out of the country and might not be reading this board much this week.

<IT sounds like they have no real data here to substantiate the claims...>

I disagree and think that you just haven't found it yet.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I will try to provide links that you can read.

Dan
