Microsoft. I know this is a peculiar analogy, but consider how Microsoft sells both the platform and applications running on it. This has not been without abuse, stress, and occasional outrage, but it has obviously worked to create a relatively stable platform on which a lively competition has prospered.

ATHM could be in the MSFT position ... selling platform access ... and also selling applications on top of it.

In this case, <platform = IP access> and <application = content service>

I see this as quite a robust analogy. Some ISPs may yearn to penetrate the IP veil, just as many developers wanted to penetrate the API veil. Even QoS and provisioning map to parallel concepts in the OS/application interaction ... the mapping being guided by the bandwidth = OS structure metaphor.

Note how defending the API veil has placed Microsoft in a key position in the hardware world. Almost no one does PC hardware anymore without regard for Microsoft specs.

ATHM management, however, is not Microsoft management. hard to beat the Microsoft guys at knowing how to turn a buck at design time.
