>>inexpensive wafers of device quality GaN<<

If and when some one does that, life will become much easier for the 37 Japanese companies and others that are working on GaN devices.

It will be analagous to the situation for transmissive microdisplay manufacturers, when Smart Cut wafers became available for purchase from SOITEC. Why do it yourself, when you can buy a superior substrate at a reasonable price? That way you can get the yield for that step of the manufacturing process up near 100%, and concentrate on what you do best - the device itself.

It's a challenging problem that may not be solved for a while, but I see no reason to believe that it's insurmountable. Imo, this should be factored in to a long-term analysis of this market, since it might affect future earnings potential of alternative approaches. That's why I hesitate to pay for earnings 10 years out based on extrapolation of what may turn out to be short-term competitive advantages. Of course, that's just the same old bogeyman that keeps Warren Buffett from buying tech stocks. <g>

P.S. - I looked at a hard copy.
