Mars mess may delay future probes
NASA chief says Polar Lander loss will be investigated

NASA Administrator Daniel Goldin told the Associated Press that an
internal investigators and outside experts would look at every detail
of the Polar Lander mission — from development to disappearance.

The investigation into the loss will also explore all aspects of the
Mars program and could result in missing the scheduled 2001 launch of
an orbiter and lander as well as delaying sample return missions that
were to bring Red Planet rocks to Earth by 2008, Goldin said.

“We are saying everything is on the table, and we're not going to just
go rushing off, build a spacecraft just to meet an arbitrary deadline,”
he said. “It's conceivable that we may change our plans for the 2001
lander.”

My suggestions:
1) Stop making Landers out of old Ford Pintos. They can't take a 5 mph crash.
2) Find a good USRX modem for communications.
3) Don't use bottle rockets from your fireworks as retros.
4) If landing at the arctic, find some nice mittens for the antennas.
5) Farm it out to the Germans.
