SStam; The fast synthesis of gem quality diamonds in all colors is very close. They can do it now, quite slowly, and are hard at work speeding up the process. There is a huge overhang of mined diamonds, both in the hands of Russia, DeBeers and Angolan interests, and new areas are getting common. Already a large protion of industrial diamond is synthetic, as the small grit cycle is very rapid(GE and DeBeers, et al) Currently the rate is slow, but new work is being done on nickel isotope catalysts to speed this up. They can now grow large gems artificially, but they have to keep the equipment operating for 2-4 years to make big ones and since it is an extreme high temperature high pressure process it is cheaper to make grits and use natural stones for people. If they can speed up the rate by 10 times, so a large gem will take 2.4 months, they will quickly undermine the smaller natural gems. The huge ones will have to wait longer as nature had megayears.
So I stay away from diamonds. I know so much because I was involved in a kimberlite project in 1992 and read up on it.
