Pentium III Notebook PCs Expected to Dominate Market
December 8, 1999 (TAIPEI) -- Notebook PCs featuring Intel Corp.'s Pentium III microprocessors are expected to replace those with Pentium IIs as the market mainstream early next year.
The projection was made by representatives of information-technology companies showing trendy products at a Taipei computer fair.
The exhibition started Friday. Leading local computer firms such as Acer Sertek Inc., Twinhead International Corp., Leo Systems Inc., Asustek Computer Inc., and MiTac International Corp. are introducing notebooks that support P III microprocessors.
They are introducing promotion programs for the new P III notebooks, to help them replace the current P II models.
Industry sources said that Intel's Pentium III microprocessors come in two types, the 450 MHz and 500 MHz units, which sell for US$335 and US$510, respectively.
Based on these figures, the unit prices of notebooks now being rolled out by the Taiwan-based companies will likely range between NT$67,000 and NT$100,000.
Asustek is displaying two models that support the Pentium III 500MHz. Both are equipped with 14.1-in. screens. They are priced at NT$101,000 and NT$109,000, respectively. (NT$31.61 = US$1)
Intel may trim the prices of Pentium III 450 MHz and 500 MHz microprocessors in mid-January, in line with its policy of replacing the Pentium II with the Pentium III, the industry sources said.
