The move by Microsoft makes perfect sense if they know that Qualcomm's handset division is to be sold to Nokia.
In that cases, Qualcomm's phones will end up in the hand of Microsoft's adversary (since Nokia is one of the staunchest supporters of EPOC and Symbian). The sale of Qualcomm's handset division to Nokia would therefore make Wireless Knowledge alliance null and void.
Since Microsoft is in dire need to have a wireless partner, it was imperative for Microsoft to find an alternative wireless ally. Ericsson fits the bill perfectly, since it is increasingly marginalized in the handset field and its market share is behind Nokia, Motorola, Qualcomm and Audiovox. Nokia's purchase of Qualcomm's handset division would further consolidate Nokia's handset leadership; so from Ericsson's point of view the alliance with Microsoft would be the last straw. I view this alliance more as an act of desperation on the part of both allies.
This news and particularly their timing suggests that Qualcomm has already made the decision to sell its handset division to Nokia, and that decision is already known to other bidders. I expect this decision to be announced publicly in a matter of few days. That should give a large boost to both Nokia and Qualcomm stocks.
