ref- " I did get an INITIAL peek at a 733MHz Coppermine. The notched process is in
manufacturing NOW. Also, based on physical poly measurements and some assumptions of Fmax, published drive currents, and gate capacitance, I now (my opinion only) think Coppermine will indeed reach 1GHz as a shippable part (with appropriate guard band). So, you were probably right all along. "

Thanks for your response.

Glad to see that 733MHz Vapormines do exist. Surprised that the notch is already in manufacturing. It implies that the process tweaks needed for the 1GHz Floppermine will not be substantial.

Yup, it does appear that 1GHZ Coppermines will be out much before 1GHZ Willamette. The interesting question is which will make it first to 1GHZ ? Coppermine or Athlon ? The year 2000 will be an interesting horse race. [ A catchy marketing slogan would have been 2000MHz for the year 2000, but that is too wishful !]

Unfortunately the processor performance is increasing faster than the software demand. There is an old maxim that if the processor performance grows at greater than 40% annually, the old applications cannot use the extra performance. So in 2000 will the 1GHZ+ processors get confined to servers only ? Or will the consumers buy MHZ irrespective of a perceived benefit ?
