Brian,
You are getting confused between monopoly and open standard.
In fact AOL has opened its AIM for several parties.
Second, what AOL is doing is hitting thieves when they try to steal openly (before getting permission to use their server and database) under the disguise of open access.
It is not like Windoz monopoly or controlling 60% of cable access and then saying that we will open if you come through ATHM after "10 internet years".
For Microsoft openness means "steal outright".
Do you know that there a standards body working on IM and AOL is part of that?
Do you know that before these theives started piling on
AOL published its protocol for Unix community? (Not for these thieves).

What is even more interesting to consider is a group of companies taking action in the courts on
AOL over this IM issue at some time in the future. After all, AOL can be considered a monopoly in
the IM field. They helped let the DOJ genie out of the lamp. SUNW and AOL will eventually get
their day in court.
