last fall i bought a no name pc and am quite happy so far...since then a few of my friends bought clones as well looking to get the cheapest price ($1200 or less)...i didnt give much thought about the hard drive (i got a 2.5 GB quantum)--what i wanted was cheap price (VALUE) given that prices slide so quickly...in fact, i had to look at the receipt to remind myself of the hard drive maker--the original advertisement in Computer Shopper did not even list quantum in the package

in my package, i took a cyrix 6x86 processor over Intel and pocketed over $100...at that time, only a few box makers carried cyrix...i noticed that cyrix posted super numbers this Q and that computer shopper has 3X the number of box makers using cyrix

also many box makers are focusing on low end machines...i just dont think brand name of the hard drive matters as much as brand name for monitors and processors (some people still care for Intel--branding recognition which Intel worked very hard to achieve)---these two components most box makers give u options to pay more or less for... JTS gives OEMs extra margin and individuals cheaper price, so hopefully we will get some momemtum...if these trends were not in place and JTS not cheaper then JTS prob is not a gud investment

getting a seagate, quantum, WDC or Maxtor doesnt eliminate the risk of HD crash or the need to back up drives via tape or disks...so take the savings and buy backup tape drives...if u think brand name translate to zero prob of HD crash and u think everyone thinks that way, there are alot of cos. to short that make backup tape products...

check out Computer Shopper and retail stores and see how many actually name the HD maker--its not a big selling point and certainly not one which customers are willing to pay extra for...maybe most people on this board are techies (IMO)

hav a gud weekend

ps i think we will be surprised this Q report...everyone in the computer making loop reported great numbers
