I also got to see another comet in 'cotton ball' form off of palos verdes (ca). Again I forget the name of the comet, but it was one of the famous ones.

Death valley is beautiful. I actually like solo hiking in the desert. All you need is a couple of gallons of water, a hat, a first-aid kit, some food, and a compass.

On one of my desert hikes (29 palm area), I took a bearing on a large rock I was going to hike to. Then I started hiking to the rock. It was winter and there were small patches of snow. After a couple of hours I made it to the rock (it was about 5 miles from where I had parked (no trail)). After enjoying the view from the top of the rock (i had to climb it), I decided to test my orienteering skill. I mentally pointed to where I thought my car was. I then followed up by taking a bearing on where my car should be based on the original bearing. Where I was pointing to and where the compass told me to go were different. I'm usually right on with orienteering (I'm currently with qoc.nova.org ). After a long pause, I decide it would be best to trust the compass. With disbelief I started heading back, I had to check my compass often because I had no reference point to head towards (the desert had indistinct gulleys and rises). Again hours later I came across the road. Since I had been taking a bearing just west of where i thought the car to be I new I had to head easterly on the road, and sure enough I found my car in about 10 minutes. If I had not had the compass I would have ended up way way west and probably would have sufferred the dire consequences.
