You have a right to be upset with Cowpland, Maher, and the decision you made to bail out was rational, although it may not turn out to be correct. Corel should be able to make a decent profitable business out of its retail sales of Wordperfect and graphics programs. The reason that they do not is because Cowpland knows and cares nothing about either cost controls or his shareholders.

Where Zigler errs is in assuming that Cowpland is driven only by the desire to maximize his monetary profit. Cowpland has enough money. He wants action. He wants publicity. He wants to be the guy who took on Microsoft. That's fine until he starts being untruthful. During the January 31st conference call he said Corel had "secured several other major OEM deals to increase their installed base which they will be announcing shortly." Well, we are still waiting.

Investors should be entitled to believe that their CEO is going to be reasonably truthful in his public statements. Cowpland consistently misleads, and the unsuspecting investor pays the price until he catches on.
