I am not so sure that official inflation rates understate actual inflation. In fact, I believe the opposite is true. PCs are a tiny fraction of the CPI, so they can't have that much of an effect on inflation rates. On the other hand, the quality improvement over the years in numerous goods and services is not captured or is poorly captured in inflation statistics.

I will give just one example of this: the information that an investor can get for free on the Web today used to cost MANY thousands of dollars just a few years ago.
