There are some pull factors that will stand out ... the so-called killer apps ... the VoIP + cellphones combination is one example ... that will drive the overall trend. In the short-term, multiplayer gaming and internet connection sharing are increasing the demand for home PC networks. Another strong driver is on the supply side ... generic wireless networking reduces costs, especially support costs, for many vendors of external products ... cameras, scanners, PDAs. Note how Plug-and-Play happened ... driven almost completely from the vendor side. An aweful lots of these folks were at the Bluetooth conference earlier this week, buying up dev kits and mumbling about inter-op. There's still a long way to go ... think there are some major holes in the proposed protocol ... flow control, for one ... my partner thinks it's impossible to design a chip that obeys the full Tx/Rx envelope without infinite buffers. But it's definitely taking shape. Will it fizzle like IR? Prosper like USB? Some generic pico-net technology will prosper.
