I'm really surprised Eric and Kissy are laughing at that secret sauce comment... you of course know what the "secret sauce" is for success in e-tail - hiring good engineers! Which means, when some great engineering candidate walks in the door, management is willing to cut the right deal to get them on board - I know Amzn did just that and see the results. (as did Siebel and Oracle).

I'll just bet you anything ebay has some sort of rigid personnel schedule which prohibits hiring top talent. Ebay is succeeding of course, because they have strength in other areas, but technically they suck.

The other alternative is you can do what cisco does which is acquire all these little startups where people are fairly compensated and grow that way.
