MONTREAL--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 9, 1999--(TSE:IFM.)
BCE Emergis' first deal as a single-source provider to a major international airline.
BCE Emergis announced today that it has signed a minimum two-year renewable agreement to provide Swisscargo, the worldwide air cargo network of SAirGroup, with a single and exclusive global electronic messaging gateway that will seamlessly connect it to its trading partners worldwide. "This deal with leading e-commerce supplier BCE Emergis gives Swisscargo a one-to-one relationship with a single service provider and eliminates the need for us to concern ourselves with the complex interfaces and protocol-translation requirements of our hundreds of trading partners," said Ludwig Bertsch, President and CEO of Swisscargo. Through a single connection, Swisscargo customers, mainly freight forwarders, will be able to exchange air waybills, book cargo space and track their shipments through the system. BCE Emergis will handle all day-to-day operations, including the translation of multiple messaging protocols, and ensure the security of all transactions worldwide. "We already provide similar electronic-messaging services, but on a non-exclusive basis, to 46 other major airlines," said Christian Trudeau, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President, BCE Emergis. "This agreement marks our first exclusive global messaging gateway for a major air cargo carrier and further solidifies our already dominant share of this market. In addition to positioning us as a single-source provider to international airlines, this deal also opens the door for BCE Emergis to work with other major carriers, in all modes of transport." With the purchase of SNS/Assure Corp. on November 1st, BCE Emergis became the largest single electronic-commerce supplier to the international air cargo industry, providing the most connections and the most services. Its 47 airline customers account for more than 90 percent of the air cargo lifted around the world. BCE Emergis is also a major supplier to the steamship lines, with a customer base representing virtually every global carrier, and is moving aggressively forward into the international multi-model cargo-logistics community.
Swisscargo is the air cargo arm of SAirLogistics, a division of SAirGroup. Together with its partners, Swisscargo operates the world's fifth-largest airfreight network, covering some 200 destinations in more than 90 countries. In 1998, Zurich-based Swisscargo generated sales of almost 1 billion Swiss Francs with around 590 staff. More information is available at www.swisscargo.com.
